RIP Promode Srimantha Fernando

It saddens me to receive news of my Sri Lankan brother, Promode Srimantha Fernando's passing. Promode has always been fun, kind, compassionate, polite and constantly bringing joy to the people around him; sharing words of wisdom to those who are lost in life. My heartfelt condolences to his family and Kirralee Parsons, and as I would always say to Promode, "May the Force be with you". #RIP #BISA #KingMing

Very interesting and interactive

THE DEEP

Till 27 Oct 2015

For the fans of creatures from the deep oceans, they have a massive collection of fish specimens, oh boy are these fishes ugly. Don't expect cute fishes like Nemo, we're talking about marine life that looks like dinosaurs and alien species. Hardcore stuff, you get it.

DREAMWORKS ANIMATION : THE EXHIBITION

Till 27 Sept 2015

Love it. They've got pencil sketches of my favourite cartoon characters from Kung Fu Panda to Shrek to How to Train a Dragon etc etc the list goes on and on.. Videos and creative showcases of the animation processes. Models and line drawings of Shrek's house etc

Take my advice, don't visit Fri-Sun. They will be massive hords of kids.
All access pass at $20 for citizens, free  bottle of coke.

AFTERSHOCKPC TREMOR (PC SHOW 2015)

So I got myself a customized Tremor from AftershockPC with the following specs:

- ASROCK H97M-ITX/AC
- INTEL i7 4790 8MB 3.6GHZ
- CORSAIR H100I GTX
- 8GB DDR3
- GEFORCE 980 GTX 4GB
- 240GB OCZ ARC 100
- 1TB HDD
- Win 8.1 64-bit
- Razer DeathAdder Chroma
- CORSAIR K70 RGB RED

They actually offered me next week's PC SHOW 2015 (4-7 June 2015) prices, which saved me around $400.

The PC SHOW 2015 Tremor deal throws in a 1TB HDD free upgrade, M7 Phantom gaming headset, an external DVD drive, TREND Anti-Virus and a ZOTAC mousepad.

Since I'm already using the Kraken 7.1, I'll test this out to compare. It should serve as an affordable headset backup.

Reviews to be out next weekend, so stay tune!

KopiTalk Baey Yam Keng #41 (16 May 2015)

Finally I wasn't working on a Saturday and I decided to attend MP Baey's monthly KopiTalk dialog opposite my place at Tampines North. So what is this dialog about? Residents (mostly) gather here to rant and raise issues to MP Baey in hope of resolution from 2PM to 4PM.

Here are some of the residents' issues, some relevant and interesting, some not so much:

1. Elevator changed brand to Sigma and keeps breaking down
2. Heaps of questions on the upcoming Medishield Life
3. Increase in Life Expectancy, job security for elderly in the workforce; Skills Future credit account for skills upgrade, changing mindsets of employers
4. SSO center support for divorcees
5. Wheelchair-friendly vs Wheelchair-ready bus services
6. SMRT should have special designation/signage for wheelchairs
7. Green and Gracious, lighting too bright, Senior Citizen corner which runs 7pm-7am not being energy efficient as elderly go home after 10pm usually
8. Construction worker safety
9. Residents tossing shit (literally) from upstairs
10. Foreigner's children not able to be enrolled in public primary schools
11. Foreigner charged $1000 by agent who "guaranteed" enrollment
12. Conversion to weekend car should pay lesser COE
13. Resident Veronica Gan, urges KopiTalk to be held at Tampines North CC instead, since she stays near SunPlaza Park
14. Catching residents who pee in the lift, and rules governing personal CCTV in HDB
15. "Filthy" playground which in due for revamp
16. Skateboarders vandalising public area, photos and videos submitted to Town Council and NPC, however resident felt action taken by Officer Nazib (something like that) was insufficient
17. Complain about Tampines West MP Masagos Zulkifli's tactless response "the cleaner is not your maid" and "you go bring the issue to court instead"
18. Talk about being optimistic and less petty, communication as a key factor in a community
19. Announcement of free SG50 NDP Fun Packs for all Singaporean/PR households, looking for volunteers in July
20. Announcement of 7-8 August Tampines NDP carnival; screening of Ah Boys to Men 3, special appearance of four of the "Ah Boys", Nostalgic food from the Past
21. Announcement that MP Baey will be in France with President, Dr. Tony Tan for a week and will be replying emails and messages late

Tips for promotion CS:GO Competitive (silver to gold)

Well pleasant surprise, I'm now GOLD NOVA III, after only 6 games (from NOVA II).

Apparently the game algorithms is made such that Novas promote a lot faster than Silvers. Trust me, I know cos I've been stuck at Silver Elite for the LONGEST TIME EVER.

Here are some LOGICAL (that will set your priorities straight, cos we all get blinded by kills) tips to get promoted from Silver to Gold in CS:GO competitive.

1. Be gracious.
Make yourself "like" your team mates. If you be hatin' cos your team speaks with an accent or plays in a different style, you're probably gonna lose the game - BECAUSE IT'S A TEAM GAME!
Get everyone to work together, 2-1-2 your CT rounds consistently, 4-1 your T rounds (as a basic thumb of rule), on the basis that teams are evenly spread, you have a higher chance of drawing or winning the game.

2. Bad Habits.
Stop waving your knife while walking, it's a terrible Casual game habit. It doesn't make you walk any much faster, yet damages your team in hp and morale (while trying to dodge you).
Blocking is a heinous crime. When your teammate is using a ranged weapon, he will cover you from your back, more than often save your ass. Do not jump/walk into his line of sight, move away to ensure he has a clear shot. If your teammate is doing that, communicate politely.

3. Plan your finances properly. No one can guarantee you'll be alive in any rounds, buy your equipment with the thought in mind:
A) Will you be able to kill at least one enemy with this set-up
B) Will your enemy gain a massive advantage over your team if they attain that item (usually Tec-9, AK, AWP or Gaygun).

4. Playing the map right.
Be very familiar with the map, there are only that handful of hiding spots. We know CT are gonna camp there and wait for you to walk into their crosshair, it is often a good habit to strafe out and shot a couple o shots on the spot for safety.

5. Use grenades generously.
Communicate with your team, every map has spots that gives your absolute advantage when you smoke grenade certain spots. It allows you to camp a distance from the smoke and secure a proper vantage point. While entering corners, tossing a flash (or two, consequtively) ensures that you get an extra second of vision to see where your enemies are, when you decide if you should engage or rotate.

6. Clear Communications.
Keep your communications simple and accurate. Example, "Lower tunnel 1" "Upper mid AWP" "Palace 1" "Heaven 2" "Bomb Drop B"
A lot of players like to chit chat in-game which is a detriment to the team because
A) it prevents your team mates from hearing enemy foot steps
B) everyone of us has a unique accent and let's be honest, we can all be a lil racist and impatient sometimes

7. Don't be bossy
More than often we meet strangers who are extremely amateurish or less familiar with the game mechanics than you are. Do be patient with them, communicate politely, give clear instructions. If you piss them off, chances are they'll feel bad and throw the game. They don't care about you reporting them. So again, be nice and gracious.
If your teammate did well, sing praises generously. It will boost their morale and increase your chance of winning. If they didn't, encourage them "nice try. let's not rush them next round"
Abusing and annoying your team mates doesn't get you anywhere closer to winning. Chances are, they'll block communication (mute) you and you lose the game.

Understand that this is only a game, you win some you lose some. Be nice!
So here are my tips for today. GLHF!

Happy Mother's Day 2015

An article I wrote recently about filial piety. Wishing all mothers and mothers-to-be a Happy Mother's Day 2015.

Collin's First and Second Prize Dishes

Pan Grilled Salmon Salsa with Sweet Potato Mash and Sweet Corn Egg Mayo $13.80

Salted Egg Sabayon Pork Loin with Gnocchi Marinara $12.80

So I've tried both new dishes from Collin's in two days. My verdict is - as tasty as they are, it's a tat too expensive for hawker food, also not filling enough for a fatty like myself.

SINGAPORE ART MUSEUM (SAM) (4 May 2015)

After Utopia: Revisiting the Ideal in Asian Contemporary Art
1 May – 18 October 2015

In naming his fictional island ‘Utopia’, writer Thomas More conjoined the Greek words for ‘good place’ and ‘no place’ – a reminder that the idealised society he conjured was fundamentally phantasmal. And yet, the search and yearning for Utopia is a ceaseless humanist endeavor. Predicated on possibility and hope, utopian principles and models of worlds better than our own have been perpetually re-imagined, and through the centuries, continue to haunt our consciousness. Drawing largely from SAM’s permanent collection, as well as artists’ collections and new commissions, After Utopia seeks to ask where have we located our Utopias, and how we have tried to bring into being the utopias we have aspired to. By turns, these manifestations serve as mirrors to both our innermost yearnings as well as to our contemporary realities – that gnawing sense that this world is not enough.

Learning Gallery: Once Upon This Island

The Learning Gallery is SAM's permanent exhibition dedicated to presenting artworks selected from the museum's collection to promote engagement and discussion of broader issues through contemporary art. The gallery also aims to nurture an appreciation for art and develop creative and analytical thinking among its visitors, including the young.
